Seventy-five Percent Of Americans Have Sufficient Vitamin D, CDC Finds

March 31, 2011: 08:58 PM EST
About three-fourths of Americans have sufficient levels of vitamin D in their systems, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But the CDC found that risk levels vary by age, sex, race and ethnicity. The findings, which are based on the serum 25OHD thresholds proposed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), show that about 25 percent of Americans were at risk of inadequacy and eight percent were at risk of deficiency between 2001 and 2006. Groups at lower risk included children, males, non-Hispanic white persons, and pregnant or lactating women. Though some doctors and researchers have expressed concern that people in the U.S. are vitamin D deficient and have urged increases in recommended levels of vitamin D, the IOM has backed off raising the values.

Quality Food Not Associated With C-Stores In Consumers’ Minds

March 30, 2011: 10:10 PM EST
Harried on-the-go consumers appreciate the convenience of quick meals and snacks, as long as they don’t come from convenience stores, Mintel research has found. C-stores pride themselves on being the “ultimate destination for convenience, Mintel says, but research shows that a third of consumers have never bought food at a C-store because of perceived low quality. They do buy beverages there, however, including fountain drinks, coffee drinks and frozen beverages. Nevertheless, Mintel foodservice research director Eric Giandalone says, C-stores were less affected by the recession than restaurants. Mintel forecasts the $22.8 million C-store foodservice sector to grow by 4.1 percent in 2011.

Anti-inflammatory Dietary Supplement Promotes Cardiovascular Health, Study Finds

March 30, 2011: 08:38 PM EST
Two studies conducted by researchers from TNO Quality of Life (The Netherlands), one in transgenic mice and the other in overweight men, have found that intake of an anti-inflammatory dietary mix noticeably reduced signs of inflammation and atherosclerosis and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The mixture contained vitamins E and C, resveratrol, catechins from green tea extract, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and lycopene from tomato extract C. In the placebo-controlled human study, 36 overweight men consumed the anti-inflammatory supplement over five weeks. Researchers found that the volunteers had less inflammation and a better metabolism at the end of the study.

Coca-Cola Refuses To Budge On The BPA Issue

March 29, 2011: 09:40 PM EST
Arguing that the use of bisphenol A (BPA) is not only safe but is the only commercially viable way to line beverage cans, the Coca-Cola Company is refusing to give in to demands from shareholders for information about whether it plans to phase out the use of the controversial chemical. More than 25 percent of shareholders at the company’s annual meeting voted for disclosure of the company’s plans, if any, for addressing consumer concerns over BPA use in its beverage cans, and called for phasing out its use. BPA has been linked to neurological defects, diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

New Media Users Socialize Online, Not At Meals

March 29, 2011: 12:00 AM EST
Individuals who are avid users of new media, including smartphones and social media like Facebook and Twitter, tend to eat meals while at the computer rather than at the kitchen table and use social media as the main source of recipe and nutritional information, according to an extensive survey of students at Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology. According to the researcher, a meal is no longer considered by college students as a central activity in and of itself, either for enjoyment or communication. Students are no less social than their parents, but socialization is directly connected to new media. “Eating is now just one of several activities being multitasked at once, all of which generally involve computers and smartphones," the researcher said.

Osteoporosis Foundation Develops Interactive Global Vitamin D Deficiency Maps

March 29, 2011: 09:40 AM EST
Fractures resulting from osteoporosis caused by vitamin D deficiency cost the European economy €25 billion annually, the International Osteoporosis Foundation says. But osteoporosis remains low on the list of health care priorities in many countries, though it is a major public health concern. To spotlight the problem, the IOF and DSM Nutritional Products (DSM) have developed interactive vitamin D deficiency maps to be used as a tool to educate the public and inform policymakers and health care professionals. A prototype of the European map highlights the differences in vitamin D levels across Europe and pinpoints missing data in each region for specific population groups. “The scientific evidence on the low vitamin D status in Europe clearly calls for action,” the IOF says.

China Cracks Down On Dairy Producers Who Lack Modern Product Testing Equipment

March 28, 2011: 11:21 AM EST
Ongoing government inspections of China’s 800 fresh milk and infant formula producers could lead to the revocation of production licenses of 20 percent of the companies because of inadequate product testing equipment. So far, dairies in Fujian, Guangdong, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Ningxia have been inspected. At least 30 percent of the dairies in four of those provinces are likely to have their production licenses revoked, but fewer than 20 percent of those in Sichuan province. The inspections were expected to be completed by the end of March. The government requires that testing equipment must be able to analyze for 64 additives, including melamine. But upgrading equipment is prohibitively expensive for all but the largest producers, industry analysts say.

Researchers Find That There Are Indeed Some Natural Aphrodisiacs

March 28, 2011: 09:30 AM EST
Canadian researchers who reviewed clinical and animal studies on the use of natural aphrodisiacs have found that ginseng and saffron, and a few less well-know substances like yohimbine, do seem to increase sexual desire and enhance sexual experience. Some animal studies showed that cloves, garlic and ginger were effective aphrodisiacs. Included in the review of studies were substances such as ambrein, Bufo toad, Spanish fly, Tribulus terrestris, horny goat weed, muira puama, MACA root, nutmeg and cacao. Spanish fly and Bufo toad have a reputation as sexual enhancers, but produced the opposite result and were actually toxic. The researchers concluded that “more studies are needed to understand [the aphrodisiacs’] mechanism of action.”

U.S. Consumers Keep Buying Organic And Natural Products Despite The Recession

March 28, 2011: 04:13 AM EST
Concerns for their health and the environment and about U.S. agribusiness have prompted American consumers to keep spending for natural and organic products despite the economic slowdown. This commitment to organics has helped the segment grow, allowing retailers, such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, to expand. While sales for the grocery industry grew 1.8 percent, according to the Food Institute, sales of organics grew 4.4 percent in the year ending February 20, according to Symphony IRI. Wider availability of organics, with major grocery store chains expanding their organic sections and food companies introducing more natural products, and lower costs help drive growth in the organics segment. Also, demand for organics is spreading to health, beauty, cleaning supplies, and other sections of the grocery store.

“Mompreneurs” Successfully Blend Motherhood With Entrepreneurship

March 28, 2011: 04:25 AM EST
Highly-educated and high-achieving women who take time out from their careers to raise their children often use their time at home to launch businesses. These so-called “mompreneurs” in their twenties and thirties are becoming something of a force in the business world, thanks to their business and organizational skills, drive and passion, social media savvy and ability to network among themselves, sharing tips and ideas with colleagues. An example of the phenomenon is a Canadian mother of two, Jennifer Broe, whose organic baby foods can be found on the shelves of Walmart. Keys to her success? “Riveted entrepreneurial focus, detailed business growth planning, intelligent marketing and financial acumen,” according to Tony Wanless, writing for Financial Post & FP Investing.

High Levels Of Dietary Vitamin K Linked To Improved Bone Density In Elderly Men And Women

March 27, 2011: 09:20 AM EST
A study by Spanish researchers has found that a diet rich in vitamin K found in leafy vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli and spinach, and also from dairy and meat, is associated with increased bone mineral density (BMD) in both elderly men and women. The study included 200 elderly people “with healthy dietary habits” whose bone density was measured using quantitative ultrasound assessment (QUS). The researchers found that for every 100 microgram increase in vitamin K intake there was a 0.008 g/m2 increase in BMD. “High dietary vitamin K intake was associated with superior bone properties,” the researchers concluded.

Europe's Nutricosmetics Market Languishes

March 22, 2011: 07:26 PM EST
Functional food, beverage and supplement experts say the European market for “beauty from within” nutricosmetics – once thought to have huge potential – continues to stagnate, probably because consumers just don’t believe beautiful skin comes from something edible. Perhaps the biggest sign of that disappointment was Danone’s failed skin-health yogurt product, Essensis, introduced four years ago but now vanished from store shelves thanks to poor sales. New nutricosmetics products continue to emerge, but Sweden’s Biovelop, which has a new line of functional beauty ingredients made from oats, says consumers want to apply, not ingest, their personal care products. Julian Mellentin, director of consultancy New Nutrition Business, agrees: "Consumers are a long way from being ready to believe that yogurt or juice can make their skin look better.”

Sustainability Is A Key Issue, And Major Challenge, For Cleaning Products Industry

March 23, 2011: 03:09 AM EST
At IntertechPira’s recent two-day conference, Cleaning Products Europe, speakers focused on sustainability as the driver of future growth, followed closely by innovation and collaboration, according to the conference producer. Both Unilever and Procter & Gamble emphasized that sustainability is a key factor in all aspects of the cleaning products business and one of the biggest internal challenges. All parts of the supply chain have a role to play in implementing sustainable practices, including regulatory authorities and industry bodies. Keith Rutherford of Unilever said that at the top of the supply chain “there is a need for a mix of safe and sustainable materials” as consumers become more demanding on the sustainability issue.

Treatment With Allergy Drug Builds Tolerance For Milk Among Allergic Children

March 21, 2011: 07:57 PM EST
U.S. scientists have found in a clinical study involving 11 milk-allergic children that treatment with the allergy drug omalizumab along with gradually increased exposure to milk built up a tolerance. Nine of the 11 children passed a double-blind food challenge and were eventually able to consume the equivalent of eight ounces of milk or more a day without an allergic reaction. According to the scientists, omalizumab (marketed by Genentech as Xolair) binds up IgE antibodies that drive allergic responses. Milk allergy is the most common form of allergy affecting the three million U.S. children who suffer from food allergies. The researchers said their next project will be a similar clinical trial among people with peanut allergy.

Worries Over Food Safety Drive South Koreans To Local, Organic Food Sources

March 21, 2011: 11:34 PM EST
Food safety concerns among South Korean consumers have spurred an upsurge in the membership of the country’s largest food cooperative, Hansalim, which sells mainly organic, locally grown vegetables and other food products. Concerns about food safety reached a critical stage after outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza in 2010 forced the slaughter of millions of livestock. Hansalim’s membership leapt by 20 percent to 250,900 during the year, completely by word of mouth because the cooperative spends no money on advertising. Hansalim operates 110 stores in South Korea, which together posted about $162 million in sales in 2010, a small number compared to leading discount store chains such as E-mart, whose product line is globally sourced.

U.K. Survey Finds That GM Soy Probably Used To Feed Animals Used In Food Products

March 21, 2011: 11:21 PM EST
A survey of leading grocery brands conducted by U.K. newspaper the Daily Telegraph has found that many imported food products probably contain ingredients produced from animals fed with genetically modified soy. According to the newspaper, the survey asked whether brands could assure consumers that their products contained no ingredients from animals fed with genetically modified soy. Responses indicated that unless the product was guaranteed organic, there was no assurance that GM soy was not used. Britain imports three million tons of soy each year, much of which is GM. Supermarkets and food manufacturers are required to state on the label if a product contains GM ingredients. They are not required, however, to state whether GM products were used early in the food chain.

Comfort Foods Relieve Loneliness When They Are Associated With Loved Ones

March 21, 2011: 07:02 PM EST
Comfort foods may not be particularly healthy for the body, but if they are associated with loved ones and people close to us, they can have significant psychological value for lonely people, according to a U.S. study. For the study, participants either wrote about fights they had had with people close to them, or about neutral topics. They then either wrote about eating comfort foods – mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, etc. – or new foods. Researchers found that writing about a fight with someone close made people feel lonely, but they could rescue themselves from those feelings by writing about comfort food. “Thinking about or consuming these foods serves as a reminder of those close others,” the researchers concluded.

Farmers And Food Safety Watchdog Groups Sue USDA Over Approval Of GE Alfalfa

March 18, 2011: 11:06 PM EST
Food safety watchdog organizations and a coalition of farmers, dairies, agricultural associations, and environmental and consumer groups have filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the legality of the USDA’s unrestricted approval of Monsanto’s genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa. The GE crop is engineered to be resistant to the herbicide glyphosate, marketed by Monsanto as Roundup. Lawyers for the plaintiffs argue that GE alfalfa will greatly increase use of toxic chemicals in the U.S., will threaten the organic dairy industry and will force farmers to buy Monsanto’s its patented seed and Roundup product every year. With full deregulation of GE alfalfa, USDA estimates that up to 23 million more pounds of toxic herbicides will be released into the environment each year.

Swedish Government Ordered To Draft Legislation Banning Trans Fat From Processed Foods

March 17, 2011: 08:15 PM EST
Sweden’s legislative body, the Riksdag, has voted to require the government to draft legislation that would ban trans fat from use in the country’s food products. Until now, food manufacturers in the country decided on their own whether or not to use trans fats in foods. Trans fat is a type of unsaturated fat found in many processed foods, and has been linked with cardiovascular disease, cancer and other health problems, though some argued the evidence is inconclusive. "The dangers of trans fats are too great to leave to the food industry to control," legislator Lena Hallengren told a Swedish newspaper before the vote.

Changing Demographics, Rising Incomes Boost Fast-Food Chains In India

March 16, 2011: 10:23 AM EST
Changing consumer habits and rising incomes are driving fast-food consumption in India where sales are growing at an average of 28% a year and now account for about $400 million of the $1.3 billion spent by Indian consumers on dining out.  While chains like such as Domino's Pizza and McDonald's struggled in the mid-1990s to compete with traditional food vendors and home-cooked meals, they adapted to local conditions by spicing up their menus, offering more vegetarian choices and affordable items. They are also now benefiting from changing demographics (some 60% of Indians are under 30) and a growing desire for convenience.

Omega-3 Consumption Is Associated With Lower Risk Of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

March 14, 2011: 10:40 PM EST
Women who regularly consumed fish and omega-3 fatty acids found in fish were found to have a  significantly reduced risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, according to a U.S. study of health data collected from diet questionnaires. The data collected from more than 38,000 women included information on intake of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, and arachidonic acid and linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acids). Over ten years of follow up, the researchers found that women who consumed the most DHA had a 38 percent lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, compared to women who at the least fish. Results for fish intake showed that consumption of one or more servings of fish per week was associated with a 42 percent lower risk of age-related macular degeneration.

U.S. Consumers Continue Belt Tightening, Signaling A Persistent Sluggish Economy

March 15, 2011: 02:39 AM EST
A poll conducted by Harris Interactive has found that, despite signs of economic improvement, there has been no change in the saving or spending patterns of American consumers: they continue to economize, thanks to the psychological impact of the financial and housing crisis. Harris surveyed 3,171 adults online in February to obtain the  findings, which are virtually identical to results obtained in a similar poll last October. For example, 61 percent of adults are purchasing more generic brands now, compared to 62 percent in October. The findings suggest that the economy will remain sluggish over the next few months, Harris said. However, the survey found that people over 65 are less likely than younger generations to take economizing steps, e.g., going to a hairdresser less often or canceling cable TV.

PepsiCo Is Researching Ways To Convert Cellulose Fiber Waste To Packaging

March 14, 2011: 07:55 PM EST
PepsiCo Inc. Chief Scientific Officer Mehmood Khan told an audience at the recent Reuters Food and Agriculture Summit that the company hopes to find a way to economize by converting cellulose fiber from food production waste, including oat husks and orange peels, to packaging materials. The research effort is ongoing in the Frito-Lay snacks, Quaker oatmeal and Tropicana orange juice units, he said. Competitor Coca-Cola Co. is already using plant-derived materials to make plastic bottles. "If you could take cellulose today and convert that cellulose to packaging, think of the impact that you would have on the costs of other commodities," Khan said.

Dyed-In-The-Wool Organic Food Buyers Keep Organic Co-ops Prospering

March 14, 2011: 07:08 PM EST
Devoted organic food buyers are fueling the prosperity of organic grocery coops around the U.S. According to the National Cooperative Grocers Association, whose members include a 40-year-old Duluth, Minn. co-op and 117 others, sales grew seven percent from 2008 to 2009 to reach to reach a total of more than $1.3 billion in annual sales. The growth seems to run counter to conventional wisdom, which says the first thing cut from shopping lists in times of economic downturn would be more expensive organic goods. But sales at the member-owned Whole Foods Co-op in Duluth grew in each year of the recession, thanks to customers looking to avoid harmful pesticides and fertilizers, and committed to buying locally.

Australia Unveils Anti-Obesity Ad Campaign Urging Small But Healthy Lifestyle Changes

March 13, 2011: 08:27 PM EST
The Australian government has launched a nationwide ad campaign calling on consumers to make easy, small, healthy lifestyle changes to help cut the risk of illness and disease. The “Swap it don’t stop it” campaign targets the obesity epidemic that in Australia alone cost the country $58.2 billion in 2008 – “a huge drain on the economy,” according to Nicola Roxon, Minister for Health and Aging. The TV, radio and print advertising campaign features Eric, a likeable, overweight animated balloon character who urges Australians to make simple lifestyle changes to become healthier: swapping big portions for small, frequent treats for occasional, fried food for fresh, and sitting for moving.

Consumers Say Genetics, Diet And Exercise Are The Real Keys To Youthful Skin

March 14, 2011: 04:00 AM EST
Consumers appear to be a lot more realistic about the aging process than skincare and other anti-aging product manufacturers give them credit for, according to market research from Mintel. Sixty-nine percent of consumers surveyed believe genetics is the most important factor in aging gracefully, while personal care products offer more hope than help. Eighty percent surveyed think diet and exercise are the most important factors associated with aging skin, but 78 percent say sunscreen is the real key to anti-aging. Still, Mintel found something of a gap between opinion and practice. Despite believing that genetics, diet and exercise are key to maintaining a youthful appearance as the years pass, 69 percent reported that the earlier one begins using age prevention remedies the better.

Heinz is targeting sports enthusiasts with a new juice blend rich in dietary nitrate. GO BEET is a combination of beetroot and apple juice that contains no added flavors, colors or preservatives and was formulated to help athletes boost endurance and stamina. According to the company, scientific research has found that that high nitrate levels in beetroot help increase endurance and stamina by allowing muscles to use oxygen more efficiently and to extend the time it takes for muscles to become exhausted. The company recommends drinking one 200 mL bottle of GO BEET each day for three days before intense exercise or a sporting event. One 200 mL bottle should be consumed three hours before exercising.

Food Manufacturers Change Packaging Because Of Concerns Over Tainted Recycled Cardboard

March 8, 2011: 07:58 PM EST
Health worries over boxes manufactured from recycled cardboard have led food manufacturers in Europe to change their product packaging, the BBC reports. Toxic chemicals known as mineral oils, used in printing inks in recycled newspapers, were discovered in some boxes by researchers who said the chemicals had contaminated the food they contained. Some firms have stopped using recycled cardboard completely, while others are making sure the boxes they use are not tainted by mineral oils, which have been associated with inflammation of internal organs and cancer. Swiss government scientists who analyzed pasta, rice and cereals sold in cartons manufactured from recycled cardboard found mineral oil levels ten to 100 times higher than recommended limits.

Greek Yogurt Sales Soaring Despite Higher Prices

March 8, 2011: 07:17 PM EST
Despite being more expensive, Greek yogurt is gaining in popularity among health-conscious consumers because it has fewer calories and more protein and calcium than regular yogurt, and no saturated fat. In addition, Greek yogurt is strained, eliminating whey, leaving a healthier balance of yogurt and cheese, a thicker texture and richer flavor. Major brands in the sector include Chobani, Fage, Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt and Dannon. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, sales of Chobani Greek Yogurt increased 200 percent in the past 12 months, a performance that matches the sector overall since October 2010, according to a report by Nielsen. Meanwhile sales of regular yogurt rose only one percent.

March 8, 2011: 03:56 AM EST
A large majority of Canadians believe that a winning smile is a key to personal success, according to a survey conducted recently by Procter & Gamble. Seventy-two percent of Canadians believe that an unattractive smile and poor oral hygiene are obstacles to professional success. The survey, conducted among 1,450 Canadians, also found that five percent felt they had been discriminated against because of their unattractive smile. Thirty three per cent of survey respondents said the smile is the most important part of being attractive, followed by the eyes and physical fitness. Thirty-two percent of Canadians believe they follow the dentist-recommended regimen of brushing, flossing and rinsing, but only 16 percent actually do.

Researchers Find Connection Between Cholesterol Levels And Immune System

March 8, 2011: 10:55 AM EST
An immune system hormone that is activated when a viral infection takes hold actually lowers cholesterol levels in the body, depriving harmful pathogens of the nourishment needed to grow, a multinational team of researchers has found. The findings shed light for the first time on the connection between immune system mechanisms and cholesterol levels. Because viruses and certain bacteria rely on cholesterol for sustenance, curbing the body’s production of cholesterol might reduce the opportunity for pathogens to flourish. According to the researchers, the findings suggest a possibility that cholesterol lowering drugs may strengthen the immune system, offering an alternative to antibiotics for battling bacterial infections.

Americans Are Pretty Much Ignoring USDA Guidelines On Daily Sodium Intake

March 8, 2011: 12:01 PM EST
Most generations of Americans – from pre-boomers through “millennials” in their twenties – are consuming far more sodium than recommended by the USDA in its recently updated dietary guidelines, according to a report from market research firm The NPD Group. The federal  guidelines recommend 2,300 mg of sodium a day for the average person, and only 1,500 mg a day for people over 50 years old. But NPD Group says daily sodium intake for seniors born before 1946 is 2,912 mg and for older boomers born between 1946 and 1955 intake is 3,199 mg. Sodium intake is even higher among younger boomers (3,280 mg a day) and millennials (3,485 mg a day). The NPD Group says the problem of over-consumption of sodium is not easily solved.

Danisco Working With Norwegian Company To Make Synthetic Vitamin K2 Widely Available

March 7, 2011: 10:30 AM EST
Danish food ingredients company Danisco says it is collaborating with Norway’s Kappa Bioscience to bring a cheaper synthetic version of vitamin K2 MK-7 to the market for food industry use in products claiming bone and cardiovascular health benefits. Danisco already markets the natural vitamin K2 MK-7, found in the Japanese food natto, within its ActivK range. According to the company, marketing of a synthetic version will open up opportunities for food manufacturers “to expand the use of this highly functional vitamin in even more cost-effective ways.” The EFSA has already granted a bone health claim for vitamin K2.
